Here are a few interview tips that I have shared with my students that are applying for practice nursing roles.
The RCN provides a CV feedback and advice service. Email your CV, full name and membership number to [email protected]
Things to get familiar with for all nursing interviews are:
‣ Information governance and confidentiality
‣ Times you had to deal with pressure/ been in involved in an adverse event
‣ 6 C’s
‣ Teamwork
Have question(s) ready e.g. about support, preceptorship, further training (formal), appointment times
Things to get familiar with for practice nurse interviews are:·
‣ The role of the GPN
‣ QOF- national targets, NIS
‣ Local targets
‣ Primary care networks
‣ GP Care Groups/Confederations
‣ Lone worker policies and advice from RCN
‣ Upcoming changes e.g. to routine immunisation schedule,
‣ Some public health initiatives e.g. flu season,
‣ Local programmes e.g. diabetes prevention programme, pulmonary rehabilitation·
‣ Have a think about what you enjoyed on your practice nursing placement/shadowing if you were lucky enough to have one
‣ Look at the practice’s CQC report
‣ Have a glance over at some of the NICE guidance for stuff like HTN, diagnosing diabetes – they don’t usually ask clinical stuff but it’s good to be prepared·
‣ Look at Nursing in Practice website
‣ Read the GP Forward View and GPN 10 Point Plan
‣ Health Coaching/motivational interviewing info can be found here
Remember! This is for use in many situations but commonly as a part of care planning, which was started for Diabetes Year of Care but in Tower Hamlets is now extending to all long-term conditions
Best wishes, Kelly
